To be or not to be...Considered

One of the hardest things to achieve in writing is...getting people to READ what you have written. It might seem odd, and ludicrously obvious to say. But no-one bats an eyelid at seeing a baker getting his buns eaten. Obviously the retail difference is clear, and buns are very nice. They also take less commitment and can be bought and consumed within minutes. Getting people to invest in one's writing - especially when it is a play or a film script - requires someone to like it enough to plan to invest substantial time and a lot more money than a freshly baked flaky morning Danish or croissant. They have to be inspired: and inspiring people is not easy to do.
So now that someone has shown genuine interest in "No Smoke" and is at the very least considering it as an option for production it is great to see that all the hard work has attracted some professional attention. I know not to count all the chickens until their are fried in peri peri sauce - that's the saying, right? - but in a way that kind of doesn't matter. Well, of course it does, really. It would be foolish to claim one's ego and pride hasn't been prodded at least slightly. Most importantly, the fact that a professional company have read the play, gone to the trouble of finding out about it in great detail, and said they are considering it, that is at the very least flattering.
It's not just personal pride, however - it's recognition. "No Smoke" is a play that unashamedly makes a bold statement and by the end of it proudly sets out its stall and stands up for a challenging and difficult topic. It grabs the bull by the horns and says "no, YOU ride ME" like some crazed matador on a populist suicide machine.
